Turbine gets the first DUMBASS award of 2009

Turbine gets the first DUMBASS award of 2009 Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under News, Rants

When you are operating not one, but several online games that require players to log in, what would be one of the most important things you must remember to do?

If you guessed make certain that you have a correct SSL certificate, then you can’t work at Turbine. Why you ask? Because that is exactly what they have done, by letting their SSL certificate expire for Lord of the Rings Online.

Players trying to log in to LOTRO found it necessary to reset their system clock to 2008 EVERY TIME they tried to log into the game. So to whoever at Turbine that was in charge of the SSL certificated renewal, as well as the QA department for making certain it was done, and the management because ultimately they are responsible, here’s your trophy folks.

Click here for some of the forum fallout.

The funny part about this, is that this same thing happened back in June.

MMO News Roundup - 1.2.09

MMO News Roundup - 1.2.09 Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under MMO News Roundup, News

Meteor Games has given the MMO world the biggest “Never mind” since Emily Litella. The once developer of the upcoming MMO Twin Skies, has announced that they are now the developer of the upcoming free-to-play flash game Twin Skies. I guess they discovered that building an MMO is actually hard work, so they completely pussed out. Seriously guys, either cancel the project or finish it. Turning an in development MMO into the usual crap I come across when I hit the “Stumble” button in my Firefox browser is just lame. Click here to read the details.

The Nielsen people have released their findings on what Americans spent their 2008 playing, and the number 1 PC title by a freakin’ mile was, you guessed it: World of Warcraft. Having half again the average number of minutes of the number 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare , I wonder if anything will ever pass this game. How much of a cult-like following will the usurper have for it to pass WoW? Hopefully it will be a sci-fi game. Click here for the details on the findings.

Hot on the heels of the deluge of art released recently, BioWare has given us a few more shots from the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic. There are three new shots, which you can see by clicking here. You can also see the new concept art in their gallery by clicking here. There’s just something about those Ithorians. MMMmmmmm… sexy.

Did Anyone Else Notice Nintendo’s Total Domination This Christmas?

Did Anyone Else Notice Nintendo’s Total Domination This Christmas? Posted by HCG KP1gL37 | Filed under News

While the hardcore gamers were battling it out in our usual Xbox 360 vs PS3 battle, Nintendo snuck in like a ninja and found their way under every casual gamer’s tree this Christmas. In fact, Nintendo sold so many of their fluffy and feel-good Wii and portable DS units, they TROUNCED Xbox 360 and Playstation sales combined.

Want some proof that those tried-and-true folks at Nintendo are laughing all the way to the bank? According to VG Chartz, Nintendo had four of the five top video game sales in the US and all five of the top five video game sales worldwide for the weeks ending Dec 20th and 19th, respectively.

Time for yet another ridiculous patent infringement lawsuit Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under Editorials, News, Rants

This is so f*****g stupid that it is pissing me off just to think about it. The latest in the seemingly never-ending string of patent-trolls and ridiculous patent-related lawsuits is the f*******s over at Worlds.com.

See what just happened is that they decided to file a patent infringement lawsuit against NCsoft for infringing on patent 7,181,690. You can read on the details of this patent by clicking here.

Paco’s Review: Prince of Persia

Paco’s Review: Prince of Persia Posted by HCG Paco | Filed under Reviews

Every so often I don’t get a chance to write a Quickie for a game before I finish. Hopefully the reason is because I am really enjoying the game and not because I am lazy. Prince of Persia had me kept me obsessed for almost 12 hours in 2 days and I couldn’t have had a better time. Well, maybe except for one thing.

Gems O’ The Bin: 10 Under $20

Gems O’ The Bin: 10 Under $20 Posted by HCG Paco | Filed under Gems O' The Bin, The Shit to Get

It is sad that there are times that the price paid for a game influences our tolerance level for crap. This of course, swings both ways though. So sometimes we pay too much for the same old s**t with a new bow on top and a fresh coat of paint (Madden) and it gets a “pass.” Other times we grab a much-hyped title and feel disappointed because we could’ve dropped $60 on something else, (Call of Duty: World At War - I’m looking at you.) but if we had paid $20 for that same title, we would’ve felt fine with the same purchase - just at less money. Almost an EPD or Enjoyment Per Dollar if you will.

Maybe you finall got an Xbox 360 for Xmas or you’ve got Grandma’s cash burning a hole in your pocket. Either way, here are my own personal 10 Xbox 360 titles under $20. Think about this when you read this list. Would you rather buy THREE (or FOUR) of these games or one new game? Just a thought.

  1. Burnout Paradise - $20 Gamefly (30+ hours)
  2. Crackdown - $14 Amazon  (15+ hours)
  3. Amped - $8 Amazon (12+ hours)
  4. Call of Duty 2 - $15 CD Warehouse (8 Hours)
  5. Marvel Ultimate Alliance (w/Forza) $15 - Half.com (10 Hours)
  6. Fight Night Round 3 - CD Warehouse $14 (8 Hours)
  7. The Darkness - Amazon $6 (10 Hours)
  8. Lost - $8 GameFly (5 Hours)
  9. Skate - Target Clearance $9 (15 Hours*)
  10. Dark Sector - GameFly $10 (7 Hours)
The foremost reason that Burnout is my top pick is due the sheer enormity of the game as well as the solid community support and continual FREE updates they keep making to Paradise City. Along the lines mentioned earlier, I also put a generalization of the amount of time each game could take on the average. Of course, the number of hours involved in a game is equivalent to how deep of an experience you want to have. Play all the side quests or collect all the orbs, you get more bang for your buck.

Gems O’ The Bin: Where Good Games Go to Die

Gems O’ The Bin: Where Good Games Go to Die Posted by HCG Paco | Filed under Gems O' The Bin, The Shit to Get

In this day and age there really is no reason to buy every title on the day it is released. Wait as long as you can to purchase the newest title by playing your older, cheaper backlog. The longer you wait to buy a title the cheaper it will be. (unless it is a misprint, or truly Limited Edition - like the Deadspace LE). I have enough on my plate from this past fully stocked Christmas season, not to mention the summer sleepers that I grabbed during the Gamefly $9.99 sale.

There are a TON of not just good, but great games for cheap. Just because a game is newer, doesn’t mean the game is better. Be patient. Save money. It is that simple. Now, to find these games you will have to do some leg work. CheapAssGamer is THE best source for this. Throw in some SlickDeals.net and you’ve got your bases covered.  So the next time you spend $60 on the new Brotherhood in Arms snorefest, grab a Gem o’ the Bin instead.

Hurting from the loss they have to take on every unit sold, they recently found a way to cut costs of materials by 35%. Star Wars The Old Republic - New Screenshots and Concept Art

Star Wars The Old Republic - New Screenshots and Concept Art Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under News, Previews

If you’re anything like me at all you have been avoiding looking at this upcoming MMO because of the foul taste still in your mouth from that travesty of science-fiction called “The Clone Wars” that was in theaters not too long ago. The joke of an animated series on Cartoon Network doesn’t help much to cleanse the palate either. Plus there is that whole issue of the shitfest that the other Star Wars MMO has turned into.

So, while the details are still sketchy on The Old Republic, I thought I would share these images with you straight from the official site. I just have a few comments first.

An XBox 360 controller with a D-Pad that doesn’t suck…WHAT!?

An XBox 360 controller with a D-Pad that doesn’t suck…WHAT!? Posted by HCG Musashi | Filed under News, Previews

It hasn’t been the best of times for fighting game fans on the XBox 360.

While it has been common knowledge pretty much from launch day that the 360’s D-Pad is absolute junk (imagine trying to drive a School Bus underwater with a croissant for a steering wheel and you get a rough idea how frustrating a simple match of Street Fighter can turn out). Unfortunately, Microsoft has taken no steps in offering an alternate game pad with more precise D-Pad control and third party offerings have taken the same route.

Thankfully, MadCatz has decided to go on an all-out Joystick/Gamepad crusade this February in preparation for Street Fighter 4. While the expensive, high-grade joysticks might be the center of attention, I think a lot more gamers are going to be going for a D-Pad that actually works.

Ok, so in reality this kid probably came across a lot more geeky than badass at the time, but still…it makes for a great story later in life.
