MMO News Roundup 08.28.09

MMO News Roundup 08.28.09 Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under MMO News Roundup, News, Trailers

There is a very long walkthrough of Star Wars The Old Republic up on IGN. The video is broken up into 4 parts of somewhere between 5 and 6 minutes each. In the presentation that Bioware produced for GC2009, you get to see the bounty hunter, smuggler, and sith warrior classes in action. You also get a good look at the planet Hutta as well. The presentation provides a glimpse into just what playing a fully voiced MMO will be like, along with different members of the party deciding the course of the conversation and the action. This is well worth skipping that meeting on s**t that no one at your work cares about. Watch the videos by clicking here, and revel in what looks like a very heartfelt apology to Star Wars fans everywhere. Dreadsorrow is pleased, and will likely grace this game with his presence.

Coming out of Blizzcon ‘09, there is a lot more news than the Ozzy appearance. WoW Production Director J. Brack and Diablo 3 Game Director Jay Wilson had a brief gab session with The Escapist about their titles that you might have heard of by now. There are some nuggets worth clicking this link to read. So you should do that, or all of my efforts in this paragraph have been for naught.

Dust-514 - Cry Havoc, And Let Slip The Dogs Of War!

Dust-514 - Cry Havoc, And Let Slip The Dogs Of War! Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under Editorials, News, Trailers

Yesterday, developer CCP made a surprise announcement of the existence of their Dust-514 project. Now more than 2 years into development, the project was shown to the world for the first time at the GDC Europe. So what’s so special about Dust-514? Well, quite simply, a s**t load.

Let me try to sum this up. Dust-514 will be a first-person shooter with “RTS-style gameplay” that interfaces with the grand space opera EVE Online. Interfaces how, you might ask? For the uninitiated, EVE Online is an MMO in which players pilot ships from shuttles, massive 14km-long superships called “titans”, and everything in between. Playing in the EVE galaxy comprised of over 5000 star systems, players engage in not only the most sophisticated ship-to-ship combat ever seen in any video game, but also the most sophisticated and complex market simulation ever seen in a video game. Just do some reading on EVE Online, and you will see that it is truly a “grand space opera” in the truest form. Each of it’s thousands of star systems is so freakin’ huge that it would take weeks, if not months of real time to cross one at sub light speeds. And the soundtrack is nice too.

MMO News Roundup - 2-23-09

MMO News Roundup - 2-23-09 Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under MMO News Roundup, News, Trailers

There has been an online media blitz the past couple of days regarding the upcoming NASA MMO. I first saw mention of it quite a while ago when NASA first announced their intentions and began to solicit for RFIs from potential developers. Answering the call was Virtual Heroes, who is well into building the game, which looks to be the astronaut equivalent of America’s Army. Named “Astronaut: Moon, Mars and Beyond”, players can look to see this game based on the Unreal 3 engine in a demo form later this year, with further modules coming out as time progresses. See? Just like every other MMO. Based in the very near future, and much upon the systems and technologies already in development for real, players of Astronaut will be faced with challenges such as operating robots, keeping the space station up and running, and surveying the moon for helium-3. Missions and tasks will be team-oriented, and will be somewhat light on the ganking of n00bs. Click here to check out the best write-up on the game I have seen so far. Click here to take a peek at some of the screenshots.

I bought my original copy of EVE Online in a box from a store. But for the past few years, the game has only been available via digital download from the official site. Soon however, to coincide with the release of the Apocrypha expansion, you will once again be able to buy a copy in a brick and mortar. Then proceed to get your ass handed to you by gangs of sociopathic r-tards that compensate for their, um, shortcomings by making other people regret the money they just sank into a game. Anyway, if you are doing some sick form of self-penance and actually want to buy into this crap, click here to see some details about the hardcopy edition coming to stores near you.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Trailer

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Trailer Posted by HCG KP1gL37 | Filed under News, Trailers

I would like to give you an opinion on this game based on this trailer, but I can’t as there is absolutely no in-game footage shown. I get it….it’s very cinematic and it looks great and all, but come on! If you don’t show me the game, I will assume the game sucks and you are hiding it behind your cinematic cut scene trailer.

Cities XL - World Building on a Truly Massive Scale

Cities XL - World Building on a Truly Massive Scale Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under News, Previews, Trailers

The term “virtual world” is thrown around a lot these days. I obsess with MMOs, and yet there are more titles either live or in development that I have NOT heard about than the number of ones that I have. About ten years ago, I and many others could easily make the claim that we had played every MMO ever made. With the great variety of titles already available today, and with the multitude of those currently in development, there is a spectrum of “virtual worlds” in a gamer’s sights.

But how many of them are really “virtual worlds”? The argument can be made that all MMOs are virtual worlds in some respect, while the counter to that is that very few of them are. Titles like Second Life, I maintain is not an MMORPG, but is a virtual world. A title like Guild Wars, is an MMORPG, but due to the instancing mechanic built into the game, is not a virtual world. I also say that a game like Ultima Online is both an MMORPG and a virtual world. Most games fall somewhere between them.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for the Ghostbusters game to see the light of day (what can I say, I’m a child of the 80’s.) Now that the game has been picked up by Atari, it looks like it’s back to full speed ahead for the release in June of 09, and I couldn’t be more excited!  Bring on the Stay-Puft marshmallow man! Check out the recently released trailer and drool along with me.

Heidi Klum’s Boobs piss off bill o’Reilly

Heidi Klum’s Boobs piss off bill o’Reilly Posted by HCG Paco | Filed under Editorials, News, Rants, Trailers

The man that asked Jenna Jameson for her number and then quizzed her knowledge of vibrators while his mic was still on, is offended by Guitar Hero and the new Heidi Klum commercial. Did I mention his 2 other FEMALE CONSERVATIVE guests not only found the spot HARMLESS, but pointed to prime time TV (specifically Desperate Housewives) as being generally worse.

Points to Papa bear for not even knowing what Guitar Hero was… Way to know the younger demo, Bill.

Need for Speed: Undercover Trailer. Bored now.

Need for Speed: Undercover Trailer. Bored now. Posted by HCG Paco | Filed under Trailers

Are you even trying? Seriously. I LOVE Need for Speed. I can dig out my old 3DO and listen to Rusty Cage to bring back the nostalgia of this series. Most Wanted really surprised me. I still play it to this day. But you lost me at Carbon. Some gamers we know didn’t feel it so I didn’t give it a chance. So I need a Undercover to wow me. Prove to me why you should get my money over the other avalanche of games this Christmas. But showing me a trailer without showing me gameplay? That tells me you either aren’t confident in your game or you are too confident in your marketing department. Either way, you should’ve tried harder.

View the actual gameplay vs what they showed in the trailer after the jump.

Sex aside, more game companies should do this style of advertising to gamers online. Show us some gore in some online only ads, or leave some language in for GTA DLC. Something that reminds people this isn’t for kids and kids alone.

Anarchy Online - Still Free, And Soon A New Engine

Anarchy Online - Still Free, And Soon A New Engine Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under News, Trailers

The venerable sci-fi MMO that was the poster child for horrible launches, has long since outgrown that extremely shitty beginning. Over the past 7+ years, Funcom has built a huge game of otherworldly sci-fi goodness that would be worth paying for. It’s just a bonus that you don’t have to, as it is free to play.

It’s a different sort of free play program than other MMOs, where you get to go adventuring with a stick and a cotton shirt, and if you want anything stronger, or want to reach past level 2, you have to pay up. Nosireebob, This is a genuine free to play game, where for no frakin money at all, you get to play all of the content in the original game, as well as the Notum Wars expansion. They are banking that once you get hooked, and after several months just to get through all the free stuff, you will want to pony up for the rest of the game.
