I dunno. Neither does anyone else, yet. It seems a little… sparse… Decide for yourself.

Midnight Riders L4D2 DLC?

(Yes, the image is named bg_comingsoon.jpg. Why does that confirm anything?)

MMO News Roundup - 6-9-09

MMO News Roundup - 6-9-09 Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under MMO News Roundup, News, Rumors

Kotaku has a nice selection of screenshots up for Final Fantasy XIV Online. Yes, very pretty, but it’s not worth the cost of upgrading my aging PC, and I’m not shelling out for a PS3 for any reason. So I’m gonna give this one a big NO. But if you want to look at some very nice images of what is sure top be as tiresome a grindfest as the previous online FF game, then click here.

There is a rumor that Atari’s Cryptic Studios was developing an MMO based on Neverwinter Nights, aimed to go live in 2011.  Click here for the article on Variety. Personally I don’t see the point of a Neverwinter Nights MMO. The whole allure of Neverwinter Nights and its sequel was that it had that awesome toolset for users to get their hands dirty building their own content. I used the tools from both games, and they were extremely easy to use and get something of good quality. Plus, the community of both games was so huge and prolific, It would take you literally years to play through all the campaigns people have crafted to share freely online. Not only that, but these games are to only ones made, to my knowledge, that allow players to actually build a persistent world right out of the box. That being said, I will repeat my earlier statement. What is the point of making an MMO out of this license? Time will tell I suppose, providing the rumor is true.

Stargate Worlds in Trouble? Not Really.

Stargate Worlds in Trouble? Not Really. Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under News, Rumors

So rumors have been flying around about cash-flow problems. These rumors were perpetuated by people that put up websites telling the world how many days it has been since Cheyenne Mountains employees have been paid.

Also wild rumors have been spread by those that go on forums and hope for the whole project to fail and dozens of people to lose their jobs because the game is not being developed according to their wishes. These people are spooge stains that need a brick to the face. They are also cowards who are big and brave behind the anonymity of cyberspace, but will pee themselves if anyone looked at them with so much as a raised eyebrow.

All of these combine to give a perception that Stargate Worlds is about to die. Well, we don’t need some last minute techobabble and miraculous rearrangement of glowing crystals to save the day this time. All we really needed was exactly what just happened.

Age of Conan - Hear the Lamentation of the Women

Age of Conan - Hear the Lamentation of the Women Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under News, Rumors

Whoa, it looks like things are a lot worse with Age of Conan than I previously believed.

The layoffs were confirmed by a question asked by TenTonHammer of Funcom:

We did have some staffing cuts at Funcom this week as well as new positions opening in the organization as part of our ongoing cost based efficiency and performance initiatives that are vital to any business.

Of course the scuttlebutt said that Funcom actually laid off as much as 70% of their U.S. workforce, but a rumor is just a rumor, right?. Perhaps not in this case.

Funcom will of course not reveal subscriber numbers for Age of Conan, but from the mouths of the players, the servers are deserted. This is a fact that Funcom has implicitly confirmed by announcing server mergers, which are supposed to occur before the end of the year.

But today, the final shoe has dropped. Now Funcom is offering a free mammoth and a bag with extra inventory slots if you sign up now.

I could include a lot more details, and even some screenshots. But why bother? Age of Conan is a gonner. It just doesn’t know that it is dead yet. So much for all the hype.

A Next Metal Gear Is…

A Next Metal Gear Is… Posted by HCG KP1gL37 | Filed under News, Rumors

I think I speak for gamers everywhere when I say, WTF? Konami recently leaked the URL to this page, but no one yet knows what it means. Speculation at The Hardcore Gamer ranges from Metal Gear Solid 4 being released for the Xbox 360 to a new MGS spin-off involving computers and networks. Who the hell knows? We’ll keep you posted if any new hints surface. In the meantime, what is your theory? What is Konami trying to tell us?

Sony Mulling Over MMOs for PSP

Sony Mulling Over MMOs for PSP Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under News, Rumors

After their butchery of more than a few MMOs that should have been awesome, and their complete bungling of Vanguard, now they are aiming to bring their lackluster fecal bombs they liberally call “games” to 30+ million people that have bought the PSP.

Read the article at MTV Multiplayer here.

Now I for one am all for the migration of MMOs and virtual worlds in general to portable devices, as I believe that will bring a whole new way of interfacing with cyberspace into the mainstream. I also think that games and porn are typically the industries that lead the way in innovation where computers and the net are concerned. I just wish that it was some company other than SOE. Because they suck. A lot.

Rumor: The PS3 Loses Another Exclusive: Devil May Cry 4

Rumor: The PS3 Loses Another Exclusive: Devil May Cry 4 Posted by HCG Paco | Filed under News, Rumors

PS3Fanboy.com is reporting that Capcom is about to make the announcement that Devil May Cry is no longer an exclusive will be rolling out to PC(?) and Xbox 360. While, (if true), this is another huge blow to Sony and another big “Win” for Microsoft. We have said this before, right here on the homepage; There is no way a publisher that spent tens of millions on developing a game will release it solely on a console that has only a few million installed customers when they can look toward the Xbox 360’s 10 million plus users. Can we expect announcements from Namco and Konami soon as well? Imagine the ramifications if Sony lost Tekken and Metal Gear…

But for now, file this under rumor control and take this with a grain of salt because right now everyone is citing ps3fanboy.com which has cites zero sources. But, the fact the entire video game blog-sphere is talking about it means we need to address it.

Update: Here is the Japanese Press Release stating that Devil May Cry 4 is no longer an exclusive.

Playstation Home Rumor Causes Blackballing Shit Storm @ Kotaku

Playstation Home Rumor Causes Blackballing Shit Storm @ Kotaku Posted by HCG Paco | Filed under News, Rumors

The rumor originally started as Sony announcing a new and ground-breaking feature for the Playstation 3 that in their own words would “Make PS3 owners VERY happy.”

Of course this sent all of us into a frenzy. It couldn’t be a price drop, because that would make current PS3 owners pissed. It couldn’t be hardware related, that would also piss off those 8 people who actually still like the Playstation 3. So it must be software-related and it must center around either an exclusivity announcement or some sort of service upgrade.

What could this ground-breaking, next-generation, innovation be? Stop if you have heard this one before…

Yesterday, Kotaku jumped on a rumor from a “source” citing that Sony would be making a HUGE announcement at The GDC 07, on March 7th. The source claims that the mind-blowing, system selling feature will be: Customizable avatars (Mii?) and in-game accomplishments/events (Achievements?) that are tied to your Mii Avatars across all games (Gamercard?).

WHAT THE f**k!? Does Sony do anything that hasn’t already been done anymore? Everyone borrows from everyone else, it is just how technology works. But Sony takes theivery to a whole new level, by stealing ideas and innovations and then claiming them as their own and attacking the originals. Just like they did with rumble, analog sticks, and motion-sensitive controls. This really isn’t news, because as past-history dictates everyone kind of knew that Sony was going to steal the idea anyway, but the real news is that Sony is pissed at the bloggers who reported the announcement; specifically Kotaku.

Sony sent a threatening letter to Kotaku, Kotaku summed up the later as, “they emailed to say we were no longer welcome at any of their private GDC events and that they would no longer provide us with any information found outside of the public forums.”

Kotaku didn’t rollover and posted the email on the web which caused an even bigger shitstorm. But now Kotaku and Sony have made up.

Good for Kotaku for having the balls to stand up to Sony, but what the hell was Sony thinking in the first place? Do they not have a PR section? How do they not know that when you comment on a rumor you strengthen the rumor. If they had just pleaded “the fifth” just like Nintendo, Microsoft and every other company under the sun no one would’ve given any creedence to this rumor. Especially since no one wanted to believe it in the first place since the over-whelming (or under-whelming as the case may be) response was “Seriously, they are stealing everyone else’s ideas again? Been there, done that.” And by making such a mountain out of a mole-hill, everyone is forced to report on this, just like we here are the hardcore gamer are now doing, in spite of the fact that we generally do our best to comment or report on rumors.

But now, since they tried to strong arm Brian and his crew, the last shred of credit that Sony had in the bank with us as gamers flew out the window. If Sony wants to drum up some positive PR maybe they should, I don’t know, DO SOMETHING POSITIVE?

Way to go Sony, thank Science that you make great televisions.

A Next-gen Ghostbusters Game?

A Next-gen Ghostbusters Game? Posted by HCG Paco | Filed under News, Rumors

These videos up on YouTube surely seem to suggest it. AintItCoolNews.com broke the story and seem to think that this is some kind of Gears of War mod. But us hardcore gamers no that couldn’t be. Could it? There’s no way to mod it unless someone has an early copy of the rumored PC/Vista Gears of War. So is it more likely that this is a true licensed game or a fan mod using the Source engine? Is it even real? Who knows? It does look alot like the Unreal 3 Engine, that’s for sure. Either way, here’s to hoping we see Peter and the rest of the Ghostbusters in a new game soon. Especially if they draw inspiration from the “Real Ghostbusters” Cartoon, which was decidely darker than its celluloid brother.
