GamerTalk Review: Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon

Paco: “Do you think that this is the type of game that needs more work and would benefit from greater depth? Or has this sort of franchise met its full potential?”
KP1gL37: “DAH has met its full potential. It is what it is.”
Paco: “So even with the bugs?”
KP1gL37: “Even with the bugs. The people that would like this don’t care about the bugs.”
Paco: “Yeah, I didn’t care about the bugs. Destroy All Humans was a $10 game. I feel like I got my money’s worth. It sounds stupid but, because it’s so mindless, I find it relaxing. Hard day? Play some Destroy All Humans, put it back down a half hour later. Reminds of Hulk: Ultimate Destruction in overall feeling.”

HCG Dreadsorrow’s Quickie - Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon

I get a lot of games from Gamefly, which has spared me the agony of spending hundreds of dollars on titles that are marketed well, but completely suck donkey balls. Resident Evil 5 is an excellent example of this. Every once in a while though, I find a game that got little press, but is so much fun to play, that it’s hard to put down the controller. Destroy all Humans! Path of the Furon is just such a game.
DAH is a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. There is even a side mission that says flat out that it was written by a “game designer trying to fill a mission quota”. The graphics are OK, but are not sponge-worthy. The sound is acceptable, and I honestly can not remember what the music sounds like if there was even any there to begin with. The dialog often does not synch with the subtitles, and I occasionally find myself stuck in a street or rooftop. The writing is…well, you get the point.
All in all, this should be a game that I slam for horrendous amounts of suckitude. But the fact is this is one of the most outlandishly fun games I’ve ever had the joy of playing. From the main character that sounds like a bad impersonation of Jack Nicholson, to the cheesy pop-culture references to the late 70s and early 80s, to one of the weapons succinctly named the “Anal Prober”, this is a game that consistently drives to amuse the player as well as entertain.
