Gamer News 4-1-09: Hey Did You Hear…

Have you seen the news coming out of a study from Huddersfield University for the British Psychological Society’s Annual Conference? Yeah I was on the edge of my seat too. Well anyway, the results of the study found that racing games cause more aggressive reactions in players than do violent shooters. Either way, Jack Thompson is still a dickhead. Click here to read about the study.
The Entertainment Consumers Association has had a little pow-wow with the FTC about some of the issues that we gamers frequently run afoul of, especially with PC gaming. Those are DRM and EULAs. Specifically, Hal Halpin of the ECA is recommending to the feds that EULAs be standardized, and DRM be noted on the exterior of game packaging. Naturally game publishers hate the idea, presumably because they want gamers to be ignorant victims of their bullshit. Click here for details.
When the development of the online streaming game service OnLive was revealed recently, people were naturally very skeptical of the claims made by the developer. Now the founder of OnLive, Steve Perlman, is addressing the skepticism. He is among other things, pointing out that OnLive has been in development for 7 years now, and the partners involved, which are some of the biggest game developers in the business, have signed off on the new technology. Click here for the article. Personally, I’m looking forward to the possibility of not having to sink gobs of cash into a gaming rig every year just to stay up to date with the latest games. I really hope that OnLive works out.
Guys, are you looking to get married to that special lady in your life? Give her this ring. If she swoons, then she is the right woman for you. If she starts crying and screams a lot, and not in a good way, then dump that zero and go play some Resident Evil 5. Click here to gaze at its glistening majesty.

If you are anything at all like me, you have been chomping at the bit to play the upcoming blockbuster MMO, Hello Kitty Online. Well this weekend comes our chance. The game will be open for testing for all fans as part of a Valentine’s Day promotion. I am so there. I want to pick fruit and earn a ton of Kitty Dollars. But mostly I want to gank noobs. Yeah, nothing makes me happier than pwning a bunch of 8-year-old kids. So parents, be sure to head over to the official site by clicking here, and signing up your children for free play from February 14-17, so I can make myself feel more like a man by griefing them until they cry. LolololOLoloL0ol0ll1!!l1o1, n00Bs.
On a note of lesser importance to me than sticking my naughty parts into an open light socket, Star Wars Galaxies is getting an update which will add dancing Ewoks. No, I am not f*****g kidding. Click here for details. I had to include this “news” item, just so you can see how far down the s**t-hole this game has come since people stopped caring about it. So take this as a harsh lesson on life. Tabula Rasa adds player-operated battle mechs to their game, and they get shut down in a couple of weeks. Yet SWG adds dancing f*****g Ewoks and they just go on and on and on. Yeah, that’s fair.

OK, this first one concerns not just MMOs, but games in general. Did you think he was gone just because he was disbarred in Florida? Nope! Yeah folks, the giant prick himself, Jack Thompson, is back. This time he’s moved to Utah in an effort to attack the video game industry yet again. Click here to read the article on GamePolitics. Why is this turd allowed to walk around among normal people? And shouldn’t these people he’s consorting with be off somewhere contributing money to deny American citizens their civil rights or something?
Allakhazam.com, while at the CES 2009 scored a very nice interview with the people behind DC Universe Online. After watching the video, I am going to bless this title with a promotion. Previously I had declared this title to be “Definite Crap”, but now I elevate it to the status of “Maybe I Will Try It”. But then again, this is SOE, so nothing is certain. Click here to watch the video. My honest opinions are that the action looks fast and fun. The graphics look very nice. Playing with a gamepad is VERY nice. The running animations are f*****g stupid, so you dev people need to fix that, seriously. However, DC Universe has now become a game worth watching.
Been watching the coverage of the CES 2009 show? Well then you might have caught sight of this little beauty; The 64GB SDXC card will soon offer users “holy crap” amounts of storage on an itty-bitty little memory card. The added bonus is that the data transfer rates are now so fast, that installing the clients of your favorite MMOs, then carrying the card with you and playing it off of whatever computer you can get your hands on is now a real possibility. Click here to read Massively’s nice writeup on it. Remember the good old days with the those giant floppy discs that you would cut a notch in the side so that you could flip it over and double your storage capacity? How about that cassette deck storage drive for the Commodore Vic-20? Well, check this out.

What better way to celebrate this momentous occasion, than by playing the very games that the huge gaping a*****e tried to keep away from us. Steam is offering a “Rockstar Collection” package deal of games for the PC. For the measley price of $30, you get all of these games: Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Manhunt, Max Payne, Max Payne 2, Midnight Club 2, and Wild Metal. MMO News Roundup and some long overdue rants about stupid assholes.
Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under News, Rants
I’m such a lazy piece of crap that I have a backlog of game news to share. So instead of writing proper posts, I will just vomit out a bunch of links and soundbite commentary in a clumsy effort of actual work.
Stargate Worlds - Interview
Videogamer.com has a delicious interview with Dan Elggren on the Stargate Worlds design team. Chock full of yummy news, here is the interview: Part 1 Part 2

Lets have a chuckle sandwich today. By that I mean let’s start off and end with something funny.
WORLD OF WARCRAFT
First, here is a rather well-done WoW cartoon. Who needs alcohol when you have MMOs?
GENERAL NEWS
Here is a very interesting article outlining a five-year forecast for MMOs. If you think that some of these things are way too far off in the distant future, bear in mind the extraordinarily long development cycle for an MMO of any value. The new titles we will be able to play 5 years from today are just now starting to be brainstormed over pizza and beer in meeting rooms. And also considering that the next generation of consoles should be out by then, coupled with the ongoing breakneck pace of PC hardware development, I am super-excited to see what virtual worlds we will have to explore.

Here’s some various bits of MMO news that I find interesting. If you disagree, then you are wrong.
Tabula Blogger is running a competition to have a sketch of your Tabula Rasa character done by one of the artists at NCSoft. Very cool.
Activision, Vivendi have pulled out of E3. They are apparently holding a separate press event the same time as the first day of E3. I’d love to know what is going on here. It is known now that Blizzard has amicably acquired the domain diablo3.com, also they are working on another unannounced MMO, so speculation is running wild!
Massively.com has an interesting article about the use of virtual worlds being used as an aid in addiction therapy. Suck it Jack Thompson, or maybe you want to tell my mommy on me? You worthless rectal wart.
Ending on a high note, WarCry Network has a good preview up on Stargate Worlds. Go over and give it a read, and if you haven’t already, sign up for the Stargate Worlds beta test.
That’s all for now. Liberty City is calling, and crimes won’t commit themselves you know.

More Video Games = Less Violent Crime
Posted by HCG Dreadsorrow | Filed under News
The numbers don’t lie. With the explosive growth of the video game industry, especially over the past 10 years in both consoles and computers, there has been a marked drop in violent crime rates in recent years.
While there is likely no causality between the two, I present these links to you, my fellow gamers so that you may be armed with the facts the next time some sniveling piece of anal discharge wants to argue that video games cause violence. Take this +5 hammer of truth and smite them resoundingly!
Oh, and suck it Jack Thompson.

Jack Thompson: All Work and No Play Makes Jack A Crusading Idiot
Posted by HCG Paco | Filed under News
He’s baaaack. This time he wrote an open letter to Bono, (Yes, that Bono), about his involvement in the possibility of buying Take-Two Interactive. But the thing he doesn’t realize, is that Bono is a millionaire and invests in thousands of companies through his brokers. I’m sure that Bono has no clue that this is even going on and that one of his holdings is in talks to buy a company that markets a “murder simulator.”
