While it’s always been a challenge for me to narrow down one title to deem my “Game of the Year”, 2008’s release schedule made that task nearly impossible. Each month was packed with at least one buzz-worthy title to take a peek at while other months (November, please stand up and be recognized) had our heads spinning with multiple A-Class titles every week. 2008 will definitely go down in my mind as one of the more impressive years in video game releases.
GAME OF THE YEAR:
Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Patriots (Playstation 3)
WHY
While Guns of the Patriots is hands-down a technical A-Class (or S-Class?) game, I feel it’s true shining achievement is it’s storyline and portrayal of characters. Sure, the Metal Gear Series is older than most of the gamers playing it today, but I don’t feel the series’ staying power is what made Guns of the Patriots so good; it was Kojima studios’ amazing storytelling and character portrayl that hit it out of the park. While I’ve had the privilege of growing up with Metal Gear series - all the way back to the NES days - it still amazes me that a game produced in 1988 with no more than a simple story on the back of a black and white instruction booklet has grown into a now 20 year old gaming dynasty that has sold millions of copies worldwide.

…an 11-year old went all the way to city hall to fight for his right to a pet hedgehog? Apparently, Judson King was such a HUGE Sonic the Hedgehog fanboy, he wanted one of his very own. Problem was…ain’t no hedgehogs allowed in his neck of Kansas. This hardcore Sonic lover took on the man, and had the law changed. Full story: KTKA
…Zoey from Left 4 Dead has 15 fingers? Yup. Attributable to three hands actually. Don’t believe me? Next time you are loading up No Mercy, check out the triple-grip on her pistol. Full story: Kezins
…the man, the legend, Roy Orbison is coming to Rock Band? Starting on Jan 6th on Xbox Live and Jan 15th on PSN you will be able to download tracks including “Claudette”, “In Dreams,” “Mean Woman Blues,” “Oh, Pretty Woman,” “Ooby Dooby,” and “You Got It.” Full story: Kotaku
…the first official Japanese trailer is up for the sure-to-be-craptastic Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li? Featuring Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk, I don’t need subtitles to tell me this movie on the fast track to the $1.99 bargin DVD bin. Trailer: You Tube
…The PS2 is the console that will never die? According to Nielsen, the PS2 tops the list of console “usage minutes” in 2008 at 31.7%, beating out the Xbox 360 (17.2%), Wii (13.4%) and PS3 (7.3%). A “usage minute” is basically the percentage of total time measured playing consoles. So of ALL of the time gamers spent playing console games in 2008 (which I think must be a go-zillion minutes) 31.7% of those minutes were spent in front of a PS2. Surprised? I sure as hell was. I have been waiting and waiting (and waiting some more) for the Ghostbusters game to finally be released. There was much delay, and even a switch in publishers to Atari, but it looks like the game based on the classic 80’s film may just see the light of day in 2009. According to the official press release from Atari, the game will be released in 2009 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the film, and was written by Ghostbusters alum Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd. Also lending their voice talents and likeness are cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. The game will be available on Playstation 2 and 3, Xbox 360, PC, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. Full press release after the jump.

Most of the Spiderman games to date have left me feeling a little unfulfilled (and slightly motion sick). Check out the trailer below for Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. This one may actually turn around my opinion of spidey games.

If the bonus soundtrack CD and pre-order extras just weren’t enough to feed your Persona 4 additction, Atlus and Amazon.com have got you’re next fix.

Once again, those crazy kids at RosenQueen.com have put together another swag-tastic pre-order bundle. While pre-order bundles frp, RQ in the past have been great, it looks like they’re planning to kick it up a gear and offer some real limited-quantity swag.
Pre-orders are now open for the Ar tonelico 2 “Sacred Army Set” which features not one, but TWO soundtracks and a low-print-run art book.
While you can pre-order AT2 from retail store such as EB/Gamestop, you can only recieve the second sountrack and artbook (with extra pages) through RosenQueen.com. Also, to make sure you get off your ass and pre-order, only 2,000 of the bonus soundtrack CD and Artbook are being printed.
While Ar Tornelico 2 is still a ways off (Mid-December to be exact), it’s probably not a bad idea to get your pre-order in early. For $39.99 + shipping this is a pretty hard deal to pass up.

If you’re a schwag/collectible junkie like me, these are the kind of announcements you love seeing.
Atlus has previously announced that Eternal Poison, Luminous Arc 2 and Persona 4 were going to have a Soundtrack CD included with every copy - a pretty generous gesture - since most Soundtracks CDs are only included in a more expensive “Limited Edition” version of the same game
I guess that wasn’t good enough. Atlus announced today via an event “Atlus Spoils” that anyone who pre-orders either of these titles from GameStop or Amazon.com will also receive a bonus art book!

Atlus is just one of those video game companies you can’t help but love. Not only do they actually listen to thier fan-base about what titles they would like to see localized, but they also hold plenty of contests each year with some true video game collectibles at stake.
Case-in-point: Atlus-O-Weenie ‘08. The rules are simple - dress up as your favorite character from an Atlus game. 1 Grand Prize winner will be selected and 5 randomly-picked runner-ups.
If you are fortunate enough to be the grand prize winner (or weiner?), Atlus will fill your goody-bag with some Halloween schwag worth drooling over:

Looks like Nippon Ichi Software is planning on helping Atlus make us RPG gamers broke as hell straight into 2009…
NIS announced in a press release today that Ar Tornelico 2 will be hitting US shelves sometime in December, more than likely before the holidays. The first Ar Tornelico was a bit of a sleeper hit here in the US, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Also, it looks like GUST studios worked on Ar Tornelico 2 as well; if you’ve ever played any of the PS2 Atelier Iris series or Mana-Khemia, then you have a good idea of what to expect.

No less than an hour after I finished my post on the coming Xbox 360 RPG onslaught did an e-mail pop into the HCG mailbox from the Atlus Faithful Newsletter.
This can only mean one thing: Good times.
I’m really starting to believe that Atlus has some sort of Indiana Jones - Temple of Doom type of slave labor going on out there on the West Coast. They are just cranking out the titles month after month. Hey, no complaints here - I’m just extremely impressed how they are bucking the trend of most studios who have gone Next Gen and are still publishing a good portion of their line-up on ye olde Playstation 2.
